Manuel Neuer
Manuel Peter Neuer
German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer revolutionized modern goalkeeping as the supreme 'sweeper-keeper', winning the 2014 World Cup and two trebles with Bayern Munich.
Biography
Born in Gelsenkirchen, Manuel Neuer joined his local club Schalke 04 at age five. He broke into the first team in 2006 and delivered world-class performances, including a heroic 2010-11 Champions League run that took Schalke to the semi-finals and a DFB-Pokal victory. In 2011, Neuer joined Bayern Munich, where he fundamentally changed the expectations of the goalkeeping position. Playing as an aggressive 'sweeper-keeper' who operated outside his penalty area to intercept opposition attacks and initiate distribution, Neuer anchored Bayern's historic trebles in 2013 and 2020. At the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Neuer won the Golden Glove as the tournament's top goalkeeper, producing a clinic in sweeper-keeping in the round of 16 against Algeria and keeping a clean sheet in the final against Argentina. Voted IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper five times and The Best FIFA Goalkeeper in 2020, he captained both Bayern Munich and Germany, retiring from international football in August 2024 with 124 caps.
