Son Heung-min
South Korean forward Son Heung-min captained Tottenham Hotspur and became the first Asian footballer to win the Premier League Golden Boot in 2022.
Biography
Born in Chuncheon, Son Heung-min moved to Germany at age 16 to join Hamburger SV's academy. He made his senior Bundesliga debut in October 2010, scoring against 1. FC Köln to become Hamburg's youngest-ever Bundesliga scorer. After two prolific years with Bayer Leverkusen, Son signed for Tottenham Hotspur in 2015 for £22 million, becoming the most expensive Asian player in history. At Tottenham, Son formed one of the Premier League's most lethal attacking duos alongside Harry Kane. Celebrated for his ambipedal shooting, explosive pace on the counter-attack, and clinical precision, Son won the 2020 FIFA Puskás Award for an unforgettable solo goal against Burnley. In 2021-22, he scored 23 league goals without a single penalty to share the Premier League Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah—the first Asian player to achieve the feat. In August 2023, he was appointed Tottenham captain. Internationally, Son captained South Korea to gold at the 2018 Asian Games and has represented his country at three FIFA World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022), famously scoring against Germany in 2018.
